In 2023, the active Tarkov wiki editors on Fandom decided to migrate all content to the wiki.gg platform, which offers wiki communities ad-free migration while keeping editorial control. Today both wikis are still online, with nearly identical historical coverage, but completely different reading experiences.

Opposite platforms

Fandom (formerly Wikia) monetizes with display ads, autoplay videos, popups, and heavy tracking. The wiki content remains, maintained by residual moderators, but the reading experience is saturated with commercial elements that break flow. For a user without an ad blocker, reading a Customs article is an exercise in patience.

wiki.gg is the alternative platform that offered refuge to several wiki communities during the post-2023 mass migration. Same engine (MediaWiki), clean themes, no display ads, no autoplay videos. Monetization is via community donations and a sustainable model closer to Wikipedia's.

Content vs platform

This is key: the content is practically the same. Editors migrated their articles and keep updating them on wiki.gg. Fandom keeps the historical copy but active updates moved to the other side. That means for post-2023 topics, wiki.gg has fresher info. For legacy content (removed mechanics, old history), Fandom still has coverage wiki.gg didn't migrate fully.

SEO and discovery

Here Fandom keeps the edge. Its domain authority accumulated over years means Google still ranks Fandom results above for almost any Tarkov search. If you arrive via Google, you probably land on Fandom without meaning to. wiki.gg has more readable URLs but lower SEO.

The community is working on redirects from Fandom to wiki.gg for certain articles, but it's manual work and doesn't cover all content.

Performance

wiki.gg loads significantly faster. Without Fandom's tracking JS (Google Analytics, Adsense, autoplayed video players, Discord widgets), pages are lightweight. A typical Fandom page can weigh 3-5 MB; the same on wiki.gg is around 500 KB-1 MB.

For most uses, wiki.gg is the right platform — same content, better experience. Bookmark it and use it directly. Fandom remains a fallback for when Google sends you there and for specific legacy articles wiki.gg didn't migrate.
