The Lodestone

Square Enix's official portal: character search, profile with visible achievements and gear, plus official news and patch notes

FreeOfficialBeginner

What it is

The Lodestone (na.finalfantasyxiv.com/lodestone) is the official FFXIV web portal maintained by Square Enix. It's been around since the original 2010 launch and survived the reboot. Main functions:

  • Character profile: your public Lodestone ID with achievements, current visible gear, mounts/minions owned (partial).
  • Free Company search: directory of FCs with open recruitment, filters by server and datacenter.
  • Linkshell search (more limited community use).
  • Character search: find another player by name + server.
  • News & Patch Notes: official Square Enix feed with complete patch notes, hotfixes, announced maintenance, and Lodestone-only stories.
  • Eorzea Database: officially documented items, recipes, and NPCs (more limited than Garland Tools but canonical).

Free and login-free for most functions (login required to post on official forums or configure your profile).

What problem it solves

For FFXIV, third-party tools (FFLogs, Etro, Universalis) depend on the Lodestone as source of truth β€” but there are flows where no third-party is reliable enough and you need the Lodestone directly:

  • Verify a player's achievement: the Lodestone shows visible achievements and titles. Useful for applying to a static where "Ultimate Legend" or "World First" titles are required.
  • Confirm patch dates and maintenance schedules: official news is the only authoritative channel. Third-party data may be lagging.
  • Free Company recruitment: the official directory remains the channel where people search for FCs.
  • Cite official info: when there's a debate about drop rate, exact gear ilvl, etc. β€” the Lodestone is the source that ends the argument.

How it differs from Gamerescape and Garland Tools

  • Lodestone: official, authoritative, but limited in browseable data (you can't easily filter items by sub-stat).
  • Gamerescape: community-edited wiki with deep lore, quests, dungeon walkthroughs.
  • Garland Tools: database with granular filters for items, recipes, gathering nodes.

All three complement each other: Lodestone for news and character verification, Gamerescape for deep-dive into quests/lore, Garland Tools for technical queries on items.

What people actually use it for

Read patch notes: official patch notes publish on Lodestone before appearing in any third-party news. If you want the literal changelog of a balance change, you go here.

Verify achievements and titles: you're considering someone for your static. Search their name on Lodestone, see visible achievements, maxed jobs, and mounts.

Free Company hunting: filter by datacenter + your timezone + recent activity, get a list of recruiting FCs.

Confirm news date / event start: when a seasonal event like Heavensturn starts, the exact date is on Lodestone. Don't rely solely on third-party news.

Show your character to a friend: the Lodestone link is the standard way to show your char outside the game.

Who it's NOT for

  • Combat analysis: Lodestone has no parser or logs. That's FFLogs.
  • Deep database queries: for "which items drop from the Lich + their sub-stats", Lodestone is poor. Garland Tools is much better.
  • Comparisons and planning: Lodestone only shows current char state. You don't plan BiS here.
  • Free Trial-only players: achievements may be limited in visibility for Free Trial chars depending on settings.

How it's actually used

  1. Go to na.finalfantasyxiv.com/lodestone/ (swap na for your region: eu, fr, de, jp).

  2. To verify another player: Character Search β†’ enter name + server.

  3. To find an FC: Free Company Search β†’ filters by datacenter, recruitment tag, members.

  4. To read news: the main page lists the latest. Filters for Topics, Updates, Notices, etc.

  5. To see your own profile: log in with your Square Enix account, go to "My Page".

  6. To post on official forums (rarely useful for community engagement β€” Discord/Reddit are more active): forums.finalfantasyxiv.com.

Honest limitations

Dated UI: the Lodestone looks like 2010 and navigation is slow. Square Enix prioritizes game features over redoing the web portal.

Limited visible data: Lodestone shows a fraction of char state (main gear yes, full inventory no). For deep analysis you use third-party tools.

Update lag post-patch: sometimes takes hours for Lodestone to sync your achievements post-clear. Don't expect instant verification.

No official public API: third-party tools depend on HTML scraping of Lodestone, which is fragile β€” when Square Enix changes a selector, tools temporarily break.

Weak search engine: searching by specific achievement, particular jobs, or gear ilvl is hard. Primary search is by name + server.

Not the primary communication channel: although official, important announcements (Live Letter, balance previews) live on YouTube/Twitter, not in Lodestone forums.

How to get started

  1. Go to na.finalfantasyxiv.com/lodestone/ (or your region).

  2. Log in with your Square Enix account β†’ my page. Verify your char is linked.

  3. Configure your visible profile (achievements, jobs, etc.) if you want it public.

  4. Bookmark it to check patch notes every time a patch drops.

  5. To verify another player, Character Search β†’ name + server. Compare with their FFLogs/Lodestone link.

  6. If you're searching for an FC, Free Company Search β†’ adjust filters and check the top options.

  7. If your third-party tool (Etro, FFLogs) shows weird data, the Lodestone is the source of truth of what the game officially says.
