The two serious gear optimization tools in WoW are both SimulationCraft-based but occupy distinct tiers of the player's decision tree. Raidbots runs custom sims on your specific character — maximum precision but requires setup. Bloodmallet publishes pre-computed charts with generic per-spec rankings — instant answer without touching anything.

The core difference: character-specific vs aggregate

Raidbots simulates your exact char: your current gear, talents, stat distribution. The result reflects your particular situation, with diminishing returns of your specific gear level considered.

Bloodmallet simulates a "standard" char per spec — usually full BiS-ish with default stat priorities. Charts are representative for the spec in general, not for your char specifically.

For early-tier (unbalanced gear), Bloodmallet's generic charts can diverge significantly from what's optimal for your real char. For mid/late-tier (gear near BiS), the difference is marginal.

Setup friction

Raidbots requires: export your profile as SimC string from the in-game SimC addon, paste into raidbots.com, configure sim parameters (target time, encounter target, fight count), run sim (2-10 minutes), interpret results. Initial setup is 5 minutes; later sims 30 seconds.

Bloodmallet requires: open bloodmallet.com, scroll to your spec, read the chart. 30 seconds total.

For quick queries — "which Vault trinket this week?" — Bloodmallet wins by an order of magnitude in friction. For deep queries — "what specific upgrades would give me the most DPS from tomorrow's raid?" — Raidbots is the only one that produces that answer.

The Droptimizer factor

Raidbots has a specific tool called Droptimizer that simulates your char vs each dropable item from a raid and ranks all possible upgrades. Output: "this trinket from boss 5 gives you +3.2%, these gloves from boss 8 give you +1.8%". It's probably Raidbots' most valuable feature for raid progression.

Bloodmallet doesn't replicate Droptimizer. Its charts are aggregate; you can't say "what from the raid upgrades me most" without character-specific sim.

Tier sets and embellishments

Bloodmallet shines in comparative charts of tier set bonuses and embellishments. Shows clean rankings: 2-set vs 4-set vs no-set with different weapon embellishments. This is valuable when you're in early-tier and evaluating whether it's worth losing a BiS slot for tier set.

Raidbots can simulate the same but requires setup per combination — slower to compare 5+ permutations.

Bloodmallet as first-pass: open it, read charts, pick the obvious (top 1-2 trinkets, top tier set combo). If the answer is clear, you end there.

Raidbots as deep-dive: if you have to decide between 2 options Bloodmallet shows as close, or if the item-source is specific to your char (gear you already have, empty slot), run a Raidbots sim with your profile.

Both are free (Raidbots has Premium with sim priority and queue skip — $5/mo, optional). Setup-once Raidbots with your profile + Bloodmallet bookmark is the standard combo competitive players use.

Honest limitations

Raidbots: setup time, dependency on the in-game SimC addon that can break after patches, sim queue during peak hours (unless you pay Premium).

Bloodmallet: charts are aggregate (not character-specific), update cadence depends on the maintainer (1 person), doesn't cover Droptimizer or complex use cases.

For 80% of the average player's decisions, Bloodmallet is enough. For the 20% that matters most (raid prog optimization, gear edge cases), Raidbots is indispensable.
