Simple Radar

Visual mod that replaces CS2 default radars with cleaner, more readable versions to improve in-game awareness

FreeBeginner

What it is

Simple Radar is a visual mod for Counter-Strike 2 that replaces default minimap radar textures with simplified, more readable versions. The change is cosmetic: it doesn't affect gameplay, doesn't add information that isn't already in the game, and isn't detectable as a cheat (it's valid asset replacement permitted by Valve).

The mod covers every map in the active competitive pool plus some legacy ones. Each radar has improved contrast, more visible text callouts, flat color palette (vs default's confusing textured walls), and clear differentiation between interior/exterior and height levels.

It's distributed for free by readtldr.gg, a CS community site that also publishes guides and tutorials. Installation is manual (copy files to the game folder) but documented with a video tutorial.

What problem it solves

CS2 default radars are functional but have real UX problems:

  • Poor contrast: on some maps, walls and floors share similar colors, making it hard to distinguish areas at a glance.
  • Small or absent callouts: the default doesn't show all common callouts — you have to memorize some.
  • Confusing level differentiation: on multi-height maps (Vertigo, Nuke), the default doesn't clarify well which level you're looking at.

Simple Radar attacks these problems with a flat palette, large callouts, and clear color coding for levels. The improvement is subtle round-to-round but compounds noticeably in awareness across a session.

What people use it for

Improving radar reading in heat of play: when 3 simultaneous actions happen, the default radar can be hard to read in milliseconds. Simple Radar reduces that friction.

Learning callouts faster: if you're relatively new to a map, having every callout visible on the radar speeds up memorization.

Reducing visual tilt: for users who find defaults visually loaded, the switch to flat palette is legitimately calming.

Compatibility with low resolutions: on small monitors or with high HUD scale, the default radar gets even more complicated. Simple Radar maintains legibility better.

Stream/content creation: streamers and content creators use Simple Radar so their audience understands round context more easily.

Who this tool isn't for

Simple Radar is excellent as QoL but it isn't:

  • For players happy with the default → if you don't feel friction with the default radar, you don't need this. It adds no gameplay-relevant information.
  • For competitive servers with strict file integrity → some LAN tournaments or serious leagues require default config files. Verify before installing if you play structured competitive.
  • For improving your aim/positioning skill → it's just radar. For skill improvement, Aim Botz / Leetify / scope.gg.
  • For users who change default radars regularly → map updates may require reinstall.

How it's used in practice

  1. Go to readtldr.gg/simpleradar and download the latest zip.

  2. Extract and copy the files to Steam/steamapps/common/Counter-Strike Global Offensive/game/csgo/resource/overviews/ (typical path, verify your install path).

  3. Restart CS2. Affected maps (all active pool and some legacy) will automatically use Simple Radar's radars.

  4. To revert: delete the copied files or restore via Steam (Verify Integrity of Game Files).

  5. When Valve updates a map that changes the radar (rare but happens), reinstall the latest version from readtldr.gg.

Honest limitations

Manual install without auto-update: there's no client. Each update requires manual re-download from readtldr.gg.

Override can break after big patches: when Valve makes structural changes to overview files, custom radars may not work until the modder ships updates.

Doesn't cover all custom maps: focus is on active pool + some popular ones. Workshop maps not supported.

Some LANs/leagues don't allow file modifications: for serious tournaments, verify rules. Most allow Simple Radar (it's not a gameplay advantage) but it's not universal.

If Steam re-verifies integrity, files get overwritten: you have to reinstall after any "Verify Integrity of Game Files" in Steam.

Subjective visual: some players prefer the default's look. The UX improvement is real but "feel" is preference.

How to get started

  1. Go to readtldr.gg/simpleradar.

  2. Click the latest version download link.

  3. Extract the zip.

  4. Copy files to Steam/steamapps/common/Counter-Strike Global Offensive/game/csgo/resource/overviews/ (Windows) or equivalent on Linux/Mac.

  5. Restart Steam and CS2.

  6. Test on an offline map to verify the install worked.

  7. If you want to revert: delete the copied files, or Verify Integrity of Game Files from Steam.

  8. Combine with CSNADES and scope.gg for utility-focused training: Simple Radar improves your minimap reading, CSNADES teaches what to throw, scope.gg reviews what you threw.
