What it is
DotaPlus is an in-game assistant for Dota 2 made by Overwolf, the same company behind the platform that hosts dozens of similar overlays for various games. The naming is unfortunately confusing — Valve has its own service called "Dota Plus" (subscription within Dota 2) that's a different product. This DotaPlus is the third-party Overwolf overlay, not Valve's official.
The app activates automatically when you launch Dota 2 and provides four pillars of features: draft assistance (live counter and synergy hero suggestions during pick/ban), smart builds (item suggestions adjusted to current trends), objective awareness (alerts of Roshan, runes, day/night cycle), and post-match analysis (review of key moments at end of match).
The free tier covers most features. There's optional Premium subscription (~$4-5/month) that unlocks deeper analytics, advanced filters, and ad-free experience. The free tier is sustainable indefinitely for the typical user.
What problem it solves
Dota 2 lacks integrated assistance during the match. The official Dota Plus from Valve costs $4/month and offers more limited features than this Overwolf option. For users wanting integrated overlay covering draft + match + post-game without paying Valve, DotaPlus by Overwolf is a complete free alternative.
The differentiator vs. Dota Coach is the focus on draft assistance: this app has a more developed draft helper, with hero suggestions in real time during pick phase. If your priority is improving drafting decisions, DotaPlus by Overwolf is more directly oriented than Dota Coach.
What people use it for
Live draft helper: during champ select, the app surfaces suggestions for which hero to pick next based on enemy heroes, your team, and current meta. Useful when you need to pick last and want to optimize.
Real-time item suggestions: based on enemy composition and your hero state, the app suggests next items to buy. Less detailed than D2PT's static catalog but more contextual.
Roshan and objective tracking: the app tracks Roshan respawn time, runes timing, day/night cycle, and Outpost windows. Surfaces alerts when objectives become available.
Post-match analysis: at the end of each match the app shows summary of key moments and suggested areas to improve. Useful as quick reflection before the next match.
Twitch broadcaster integration: if you stream, DotaPlus integrates with OBS to display some stats on the broadcast layout — interesting to streamers.
Who this tool isn't for
DotaPlus by Overwolf is excellent in many cases but not optimal for all:
- Mac/Linux players → Overwolf is Windows only. There's no version for other operating systems.
- High MMR (6K+) players → at that level the assistance becomes redundant; the player has internal knowledge superior to the tool.
- Users who pay Valve's Dota Plus and use it → there's overlap of features. Most users use one or the other, not both.
- Pro tournament analysis → datdota and Liquipedia.
- Personal stats outside the game → Dotabuff and STRATZ.
How it's used in practice
Install Overwolf from
overwolf.com. Free, requires Windows. From the Overwolf app store, search "DotaPlus" (look for the Overwolf one, not Valve's Dota Plus from Steam).
Launch Dota 2 normally. The app activates automatically in the loading screen.
During All Pick, the app surfaces draft suggestions in a panel of the screen as picks/bans unfold.
During the match, the app monitors objectives and surfaces alerts as they become available. Item suggestions appear in a corner of the screen.
At the end of the match, the app shows the post-game summary briefly.
For settings, access them from the Overwolf system tray. You can adjust frequency, position, audio, and enable/disable specific categories.
Honest limitations
Naming confusing with Valve's: the app being called "DotaPlus" creates real confusion with Valve's official product. Always confirm you're looking at the Overwolf version.
Only Windows: same limitation as Dota Coach. Mac/Linux not supported.
Visual presence during matches: the overlay can feel cluttered during a match. Settings let you tone down, but for users who prefer minimum interface, it can be annoying.
Premium tier with notable upselling: although the free tier is sustainable, the app frequently shows Premium upgrade prompts. Visible vs. competitors with less aggressive upsell.
Telemetry sent to Overwolf: as Overwolf app, it collects gameplay data. Read privacy policy if you have privacy concerns.
Conflict with Valve's Dota Plus: if you use both, you'll see redundant suggestions. Most users use one or the other.
How to get started
Verify Windows.
Install Overwolf if you don't already have it. Some users already have it for other Overwolf apps (LoL, CS2, etc.).
Search "DotaPlus" in the Overwolf store. Make sure to install the Overwolf version, not look for Valve's product on Steam.
Open Dota 2. The app activates automatically.
Configure overlay position and frequency of suggestions in your first 2-3 matches.
Test the draft helper specifically — that's the most differentiated feature vs. Dota Coach.
After a week of use, decide: useful or noisy? If useful, possibly Premium. If noisy, uninstall and try Dota Coach or Valve's Dota Plus.
