What it is
HoYoLAB is HoYoverse's official companion platform, available as web (hoyolab.com) and as a mobile app for iOS and Android. It covers every studio title (Genshin Impact, Honkai: Star Rail, Zenless Zone Zero, Honkai Impact 3rd) from the same account, with dedicated sections per title.
For HSR specifically it concentrates the daily check-in that grants accumulated rewards (including stellar jades), Battle Chronicle with your account stats (characters, teams, endgame progress), interactive game maps, official redemption codes with immediate publication, new code alerts, and an officially moderated community feed.
It's free and, being an official product, has no risk of violating terms of service. It's the only tool with this level of integration that HoYoverse explicitly authorizes.
What problem it solves
There are three distinct problems HoYoLAB solves simultaneously.
The first is access to rewards only obtainable outside the game: the daily check-in accumulates resources that over a month equate to one or two additional pulls. Not doing it is forfeiting that income for no reason.
The second is account information consultable without being in the game. The Battle Chronicle shows what characters you have, what endgame progress you've made, what you're running. Useful for reviewing your roster when planning builds outside the game or when someone wants to see your progress.
The third is centralization of official information: redemption codes published directly by HoYoverse (no scam risk), event announcements, maintenance reminders. Everything historically searched on Twitter or third-party sites is consolidated here.
Differentiation (vs similar-cluster tools)
There's no real direct competition because HoYoLAB is an official product. Alternatives are fragmented:
Official HSR Discord covers communication and notices but doesn't have check-in or Battle Chronicle.
HoYoverse Twitter/X publishes codes but requires attention and filtering noise.
Third-party sites (Game8, Polygon, etc.) list codes but with delay and no guarantee of being updated.
Third-party interactive maps (Star Rail Map AppSample) exist and often have deeper filtering, but require trust in the maintainer.
HoYoLAB isn't necessarily the best in each individual category, but it's the only one that consolidates them with the official seal and no ToS risk. For administrative account tasks (check-in, codes, stats), it's the reasonable default.
What people use it for
Daily check-in to accumulate rewards: the most common use. Takes 5 seconds a day and over a month delivers significant resources, including jades, upgrade materials and consumables.
Redeem official codes fast: when HoYoverse publishes codes (post-livestream, events, milestones), HoYoLAB publishes them first and lets you redeem without opening the game.
Check Battle Chronicle: review what characters you have, what progress you've made in Memory of Chaos or Pure Fiction, what builds you have equipped, without needing to log into the game.
Use official interactive maps: to find farming materials, hidden chests, mob spawns. Coverage is reasonable, though some players prefer third-party maps for more advanced filters.
Follow forums and official community: the moderated community feed has fan art, discussions, short guides. Curated, without the toxicity sometimes seen on Reddit or open forums.
Who this tool isn't for
If the only thing you want is to play HSR without administrative overhead, HoYoLAB isn't strictly necessary, but you'll be leaving rewards on the table. The time investment is minimal, so the typical reason not to use it is not knowing it exists, not that it's inconvenient.
It's also not the tool for builds, tier lists or theorycraft. Gameplay recommendations are delegated to the community and to sites like Prydwen, KQM or Game8. HoYoLAB is administrative companion, not editorial source.
If you want interactive maps with advanced filters (filter by character that needs the material, mark what you've collected with cross-device persistence), third-party tools may cover that specific use case better.
How it works in practice
The typical daily flow takes less than a minute:
Open HoYoLAB (web or mobile app).
Navigate to the Honkai: Star Rail section.
Tap the daily check-in banner and claim the day's reward.
If new codes have been published, redeem them from the redemption section.
Done.
The periodic lookup flow (weekly or per event):
Review Battle Chronicle to confirm endgame progress.
Read feed announcements for upcoming events.
If exploring interactive maps, open the corresponding section.
The mobile app is more agile for daily check-in; the web is more comfortable for Battle Chronicle and maps on a large screen.
Honest limitations
Requires linked HoYoverse account. If your HSR account is on PlayStation or another platform not linked to a HoYoverse account, setting up the link is a required step.
Battle Chronicle has delay. Data can take minutes or hours to reflect recent changes. Not real-time.
Check-in notifications can be annoying. The mobile app pushes reminder notifications some users find intrusive. They can be disabled in settings.
Interactive maps aren't as complete as alternatives. For serious farming, third-party tools have finer filters and more up-to-date data.
The community feed has limited utility. Moderated but surface-level: fan art and casual discussion more than analysis. For substantive discussion, Reddit or Discord are better.
The interface can feel heavy. The app tries to cover multiple games at once and navigation between sections isn't always direct. Expected from a multi-IP official product.
Profile privacy: Battle Chronicle is visible to others if your profile is public. Check the privacy settings if you don't want your UID to expose your roster.
How to get started
Available as web (hoyolab.com) or as the official mobile app on App Store and Play Store. Free.
For your first setup:
Sign in with your HoYoverse account (the same one as HSR).
If you play on console and don't have a linked account, configure the link from the game's mobile app before continuing.
Navigate to the Honkai: Star Rail section inside HoYoLAB.
Activate daily check-in (you can configure automatic reminders).
Familiarize yourself with the main sections: Battle Chronicle, Redeem Codes, Interactive Map.
Once configured, maintenance is minimal: 30 seconds a day for check-in and reviewing codes when they drop in patches or livestreams. It's the tool with the best investment/return ratio in the HSR scene.
