What it is
Nexus Mods is the historic PC modding hub, operated by Black Tree Gaming Ltd. It hosts mods for 2,000+ games — from Skyrim (its flagship with 80,000+ mods) to Cyberpunk 2077, Fallout, Starfield, and the Valheim section.
The Valheim section has ~2,000 mods, far fewer than Thunderstore (~10,000+), but with a different emphasis: textures, retextures, custom 3D models, skin packs. Gameplay and QoL mods mostly stayed on Thunderstore — devs preferred that ecosystem for Valheim from day one.
It's a legitimate hub, not spam. But for Valheim it plays a secondary role.
What it solves
When Valheim modding kicked off (2021), there was no clear pick between Nexus and Thunderstore. Many early mods went to Nexus by habit from the classic modding community.
Over time the ecosystem gravitated to Thunderstore for two reasons:
- r2modman speaks Thunderstore natively. Click → install. With Nexus, Vortex is optional but less integrated.
- Thunderstore is unlimited free-tier. Nexus rate-limits free accounts.
But some creators didn't migrate. For mods that live only on Nexus, the site is the only option. They tend to be:
- Large texture packs (4K HD textures, skin overhauls).
- Discontinued mods the author didn't port.
- Mods with restrictive licenses (some asked Thunderstore not to host them).
- Custom visual assets (armor models, banner designs, etc.).
Differentiation
Vs. Thunderstore (Valheim): Thunderstore is the primary platform. More mods, better manager integration, unlimited free tier. Nexus is secondary — search there if Thunderstore doesn't have it.
For other games (Skyrim, Fallout): Nexus is the primary, no contest. That logic didn't transfer to Valheim.
Vs. GitHub raw: many experimental mods live only on GitHub releases. For those, neither Nexus nor Thunderstore is the answer — grab the .dll from GitHub directly.
What people use it for
Visual texture packs. HD armor, weapons, terrain retextures — most live on Nexus historically.
Custom skin packs. Variations of 3D models replacing vanilla items with alternate looks (runic swords, aesthetically tweaked armor).
Hunting abandoned 2021 mods. Some good mods weren't updated for Ashlands but their code is still interesting reading for devs. Nexus preserves them.
Niche community mods. Subcultures inside Valheim (RP servers, ultra-realistic survival, etc.) sometimes publish on Nexus out of habit.
Cross-game browsing. If you mod Skyrim + Valheim from Nexus, your account and bookmarks are shared. Convenient for users already on Nexus for other games.
Who this tool is not for
If you're starting Valheim modding: go straight to Thunderstore. Nexus is noise for someone new — most mods you need aren't there.
If you want a one-click install mod manager: Vortex (Nexus's) works but is more friction than r2modman/Gale for Valheim specifically.
If your modlist is Thunderstore + Nexus mixed: double-managing is overhead — you'll have to track manually what comes from where.
If your patience with download rate limits is low: Nexus free tier caps speed and forces wait timers. Premium ($4-5/mo) removes them but it's a subscription.
How it works in practice
- Go to
nexusmods.com/valheim. - Browse by category (Armor, Weapons, Models and Textures, Gameplay, Utilities) or use search.
- When you find a mod, read its description, requirements, install notes.
- To download: free account required. Click "Manual Download" for the .zip.
- Manual install:
- Extract the .zip.
- Move the contents following the mod's instructions (typically
BepInEx/plugins/for DLLs, other folders for textures). - The mod should run on next Valheim launch.
- To keep updated: check Nexus periodically. No auto-notifications without Premium.
If you want to automate via Vortex (Nexus's manager), download Vortex, link your account, and mods install through Vortex. Works but it's overhead for Valheim where Thunderstore is primary.
Honest limitations
Download rate limits without Premium. Free tier caps speed and forces waits between downloads. Past 5 mods a day it feels slow.
Limited Valheim catalog. ~2,000 mods vs ~10,000+ on Thunderstore. What most people need is on Thunderstore.
Frequent manual installs. Even with Vortex, many Valheim Nexus mods have manual steps or require moving specific files.
Aggressive ads without Premium. Nexus free UI has lots of ads, popups, upgrade prompts. Premium ($4-5/mo) clears them but it's a paywall.
Account required. Can't download without registering. Anonymous browsing is fine.
Less active community than Skyrim's. Valheim mod comments on Nexus see less engagement than on Thunderstore where the main conversation lives.
Getting started
- Only start with Nexus if you already searched on Thunderstore and didn't find it.
- Go to
nexusmods.com/valheimand create a free account if you don't have one. - Find the mod (search by name).
- Manual Download → grab the .zip.
- Carefully read the mod's install notes (each can have different steps).
- Move the relevant files into
BepInEx/plugins/<mod-name>/. - Launch Valheim, verify in logs that the mod loaded.
If you end up depending on several Nexus mods, consider Vortex for management, but ideally keep your primary modlist on Thunderstore/r2modman and treat Nexus as a side hub.
