Valheim

Co-op Viking survival: ten biomes, seven bosses, and the genre's most active modding community

Iron Gate AB's sandbox survival game launched in Early Access in February 2021. Nordic-mythology themed, it combines procedural exploration, free-form building, weighty melee combat, and boss-gated progression. One of the most active modding communities in the survival genre.

Blitz (Blitzkriegsler) built his reputation on Valheim with short tutorials focused on building tips and concrete mechanics β€” '50+ Building Tips in Valheim', 'How to Build a Starter House', construction snapping tricks. In 2026 he mixes Valheim with other survival games (Subnautica 2, Hotel Architect) but his channel remains a reference for the building tip videos the community links when someone asks how to achieve X structure.

Kysen is Valheim's canonical pick for progression guides and beginner-friendly content. His 'Day 1 in Valheim: What You NEED To Do First' is among the most-watched videos for the game overall. He runs public servers (KysenHeim) where the community joins runs and boss fights. Pedagogical tone β€” explains mechanics clearly without assuming prior knowledge, ideal for someone starting or returning after months.

NickRawcliffe is the English voice for hardcore Valheim β€” speedruns with a 'no resets' rule (die and you lose runs), aggressive boss progression, and lots of live streams. His 'Valheim No Resets Speedrun' series is a reference for runners wanting to see execution live, not edited. He also covers DayZ and other survival games β€” Valheim takes most uploads but shares the channel.

SmittySurvival is a Valheim-dedicated builder publishing long showcases focused on biome-themed builds β€” Meadows taverns, Black Forest fortresses, Viking longhouses, mountain castles. His signature is cinematic editing and Valheim's ambient lighting used to its full potential. Low cadence (monthly uploads of large projects) but every video bundles hours of work into a complete base ready to clone with Blueprint Rune.

Versaugh blends building with continuous hardcore-survival runs. His main series 'Valheim Builder VS Hardcore Survival' is 400+ in-game days deep and mixes cinematic builds (castles, harbors, taverns) with permadeath β€” die and you restart. Slow, atmospheric narrative edits with honest to-camera talks while he builds. For viewers wanting a creator who understands both sides of the game: the aesthetic and the dangerous.

About the game

What Valheim is

Valheim is a cooperative sandbox survival game developed by Iron Gate AB, a five-person Swedish studio at the time of launch. It hit Steam Early Access on February 2, 2021, and became one of the year's biggest surprises: five million copies in its first month, twelve million cumulative to date, and a polish bar that hasn't slipped across five years of active development.

The game drops you into the tenth Norse world β€” Valheim, a purgatory for fallen Viking warriors β€” with one of Odin's ravens as your only guide and the brief of killing Yggdrasil's corrupted ones. From there you build, explore, and push through progressively deadlier biomes: Meadows, Black Forest, Swamp, Mountain, Plains, Mistlands, and Ashlands on the stable branch, with Deep North still pending for 1.0.

The formula doesn't invent anything new: melee combat with stagger, parry, and dodge roll; modular building with beams, stones, and roofs; a three-slot food system that grants health/stamina/eitr instead of tracking hunger; progression gated by material tiers and bosses. But every single decision is polished β€” biomes have sharp visual and sonic identity, the difficulty curve is honest, and native ten-player co-op (more with mods) makes every session with friends memorable.

Why the current ecosystem matters

Valheim is still in Early Access as of May 2026, but "Early Access" here doesn't mean abandoned. Iron Gate has shipped meaningful updates on a reasonable cadence:

  • Hearth & Home (2021) β€” overhaul of food, building, and combat.
  • Mistlands (2022) β€” new biome, magic system, procedural dungeons.
  • Ashlands (May 2024) β€” volcanic biome, 30+ new weapons, Fader boss, cinder mechanics.
  • Call to Arms (February 2026) β€” refined combat, trinkets, Ashlands balance pass.

The next major step is Deep North, the final biome that closes the road to 1.0. Iron Gate avoids committing to dates β€” their go-to phrase is "when it's ready" β€” but 1.0 is tied to that patch and to the confirmed PS5 and Switch 2 ports landing sometime in 2026-2027.

For someone playing today, this means "vanilla Valheim" is no longer the launch game: systems, biomes, and mechanics keep getting added, and rebalances make six-month-old guides drift fast.

The tools ecosystem

Unlike Skyrim β€” where modding is the endgame β€” Valheim modding is more a gameplay extension than a project in itself. The stack is notably simpler:

Frameworks: BepInExPack Valheim is the universal loader (every mod runs on top of it); Jotunn is the abstraction library most content-adding mods (new items, prefabs, RPCs) use to avoid touching reflection.

Managers: r2modman, Gale, and Thunderstore Mod Manager all speak Thunderstore, the primary repository. Installation is one click β€” pull BepInEx + the mod and you're set. Nexus Mods exists as an alternate repo, mostly for mods that never made it to Thunderstore.

Standout utilities: ValheimPlus (Grantapher fork) is still the "all-in-one" QoL choice, though many players today prefer focused, atomic mods; Better Continents replaces terrain generation with custom maps (image-based heightmaps and biome layers).

Building: PlanBuild is the mod that defines the category β€” Blueprint Rune to copy/paste structures, Plan Hammer to build in "ghost mode" before having the materials. Valheimians (web) is where the community publishes downloadable blueprints.

World: valheim-map.world is the canonical seed viewer β€” paste your seed, see the whole map, boss locations, Haldor the merchant, Hildir the trader, crypts. Indispensable before committing 200 hours to a world.

Who this codex is for

Players starting or returning to Valheim on PC who want to:

  • Understand the correct progression without spoiling bosses or breaking themselves against the Swamp in Black Forest gear.
  • Build bases that don't collapse on the first troll raid or sink into the Swamp floor.
  • Install mods without breaking their world β€” Valheim modding is forgiving when you start with the right manager and disastrous when someone tells you "just drop the zip and paste the DLLs."
  • Find builders and guides who are honest and cover the current patch, not 2021 videos with mechanics that no longer exist.

Every tool and resource listed here is specifically curated for the current state of the game (post-Ashlands, post-Call to Arms). Once Deep North and 1.0 land, the codex will flag what changes.
