Vortex (Baldur's Gate 3)

Nexus Mods' official manager with BG3 support — one-click installs and auto-resolved dependencies

FreeOpen sourceMulti-gameBeginner

What it is

Vortex is Nexus Mods' official mod manager, open source under GPL-3.0, with support for dozens of games including Baldur's Gate 3. It integrates downloading, installing, and ordering mods directly with your Nexus account, and resolves dependencies between mods automatically.

For BG3, Vortex handles .pak mods and load-order generation. Its big differentiator is that it's the same app many players already use for Skyrim, Cyberpunk, or other titles, so the flow is familiar.

What problem it solves

Downloading mods, unzipping them, placing them in the right folder, and ordering them by hand is tedious and fragile. Vortex automates the whole chain: from the download button on Nexus to the active, ordered mod, in one click.

For someone already managing several games, the extra value is not learning a different tool for each. Vortex centralizes modding across your whole library in a consistent interface, with profiles, ordering rules, and rollback.

Differentiation

Against BG3 Mod Manager, Vortex is generalist and BG3MM is dedicated. BG3MM offers more direct control over BG3's specific load order and is the community favorite for complex setups. Vortex wins on cross-game convenience and end-to-end Nexus integration.

Against official mod support, Vortex handles the full Nexus catalog on PC, not just mod.io's curated mods, but it doesn't reach console.

What people use it for

Installing BG3 mods in one click: from the Nexus button straight to the app, no manual steps.

Centralizing several games: managing BG3 alongside Skyrim, Cyberpunk, and others from one interface.

Resolving dependencies automatically: having Vortex warn and order when a mod needs another.

Using profiles: keeping separate configurations and being able to roll back if something breaks.

Who this tool is NOT for

If you want maximum control over BG3's load order and to follow community guides to the letter, BG3MM is the tool those guides assume.

If you play on console, Vortex doesn't apply: only official mod support runs there.

How it's used in practice

  1. Install Vortex and link it with your Nexus Mods account.
  2. Enable management of Baldur's Gate 3 in Vortex.
  3. Use the "Mod Manager Download" button on Nexus pages to send mods to Vortex.
  4. Let Vortex install and propose the order; adjust rules if needed.
  5. Deploy the load order and launch the game.

Honest limitations

Less precise for BG3 than BG3MM: BG3 modding guides are usually written with BG3MM and its order handling in mind.

Abstraction layer: Vortex's automation sometimes hides what's happening underneath, which complicates debugging a specific conflict.

PC only: no console support.

Tied to the patch: like all BG3 modding, it requires keeping Script Extender and mods current after each update.

How to get started

Install Vortex from Nexus Mods, link your account, and enable Baldur's Gate 3 in the managed-games list. From there, every BG3 mod on Nexus has a button that sends it straight to Vortex. If you later need fine order control, consider moving that aspect to BG3 Mod Manager, which the community uses as the BG3 standard.
