What Elden Ring Nightreign is

Elden Ring Nightreign is FromSoftware's standalone spin-off released in May 2025, directed by Junya Ishizaki. It's not an Elden Ring DLC — it's a completely separate game that reuses the engine, assets, and aesthetic of Elden Ring to build a different experience: compact co-op, 40-minute runs, with a relic system and class-based gameplay.

The central premise is Expedition: you and up to 2 other players (you can play solo too, but the design is meant for groups) load into a procedural map derived from Limveld, a condensed version of the Lands Between. You have 3 in-game days to level up, find weapons, farm relics, and face the final Nightlord. Each night, a "dark rain" begins closing the map toward a central circle — a gameplay loop borrowing from battle royale but executed Souls-style.

The 8 base Nightfarers (Wylder, Guardian, Ironeye, Recluse, Duchess, Raider, Revenant, Executor) have unique kits: exclusive skills, weapon proficiencies, ultimates with cooldowns, and class synergies. There's no character creation — you pick a Nightfarer when you start the Expedition.

Forsaken Hollows (DLC, 2026)

In 2026 FromSoftware released Forsaken Hollows, the first paid expansion (~$25 USD). It adds 2 new Nightfarers (DLC details are under selective NDA still), an additional Nightlord, new relics, weapons, and an alternate map. For the community it's a significant content boost — the base game was feeling limited in variety post-launch.

Why it matters

Nightreign changes the Souls genre's rules:

Co-op designed from the ground up. Where vanilla Elden Ring has co-op as an afterthought with fog walls and ephemeral phantoms, Nightreign is built for groups. The 3 hours an Expedition takes with friends are dense — no walking simulator between boss fights.

Roguelike + Souls fusion. The Expedition structure (procedural run, death = restart, relics that persist between runs) is genuinely novel in FromSoftware's catalog. It's Souls combat with Hades loops.

Short session time. 40 minutes per run makes the game viable for players with fragmented schedules. You don't need to block out 3 hours for "a serious session."

Codex ecosystem

The tools and resources ecosystem is much smaller than base Elden Ring's — the game is only 12 months old + DLC. There are 2 build planners (Mobalytics, Relics.pro) and a desktop calculator, 2 main wikis (Fextralife, Game8), map routing tools, and multiplayer mods.

If you're coming from base Elden Ring, the main shock is the speed: builds form in 30 minutes, you die, you start another Nightfarer. There's no character permanence except through farmed relics.
