What it is
Wise Old Man (WOM) is a free, open-source progress tracker for Old School RuneScape. It's built on top of the game's official hiscores and stores snapshots of your account over time, so you can see not just where you stand today but how much you gained over the last day, week or competition period.
Beyond raw XP, it calculates efficiency metrics like EHP (efficient hours played) and EHB (efficient hours bossed), and records boss kill counts, activities, achievements and name changes. It's a community project under the MIT license: anyone can read the code or contribute on GitHub.
What problem it solves
Jagex's official hiscores show you a fixed number: your current XP and rank. They don't tell you how much you progressed, don't keep history and don't let you compete in a measurable way with friends or your clan.
WOM fills exactly that gap. It takes periodic snapshots, calculates the differences and turns your grind into actionable data: gains per skill, EHP/EHB earned, boss-kill evolution and a competition ranking. For anyone playing with goals (a cape, a pet, an account milestone), this turns "I think I made progress" into a concrete figure.
Differentiation
It competes head-to-head with TempleOSRS and Crystal Math Labs, and each has a clear identity:
- Wise Old Man is the most modern and open source, with the best RuneLite integration and the most polished competitions system.
- TempleOSRS targets power users: it offers the deepest data, drop logs and collection log tracking.
- Crystal Math Labs is the OG, the inventor of EHP, with the longest historical XP record but a more dated UI.
WOM wins on accessibility and active maintenance. Its official RuneLite plugin and Discord bot update stats automatically, something that lowers friction for casual groups and clans.
What people use it for
- Tracking personal gains: seeing how much XP, EHP and EHB you earned per day or week to check whether your grind pace meets your account goals.
- Running competitions: organizing Skill of the Week or Boss of the Week inside a clan, with a leaderboard that updates itself.
- Tracking groups and clans: grouping accounts to see internal rankings, group totals and who's active.
- Integrating with RuneLite: installing the official plugin so your stats update without visiting the site manually.
- Auditing achievements and boss kills: reviewing which milestones you hit and each boss's count over time.
Who this tool is NOT for
It's not for those chasing the longest possible historical dataset: Crystal Math Labs has years of head start in accumulated data for that. It's also not the best option if your core priority is the collection log or granular drop tracking, where TempleOSRS is more developed. And if you don't play with measurable goals or in a group, you probably won't get much out of a tracker like this.
How it's used in practice
- Go to wiseoldman.net and search for your OSRS username.
- Hit "Update" to create the first snapshot from the official hiscores.
- Install the Wise Old Man plugin in RuneLite so updates happen automatically whenever you play.
- Come back after a few sessions and review your gains per skill, EHP and EHB for the period you choose.
- To compete, create or join a competition or a group, and invite your clan with the Discord bot.
Honest limitations
- Depends on the official hiscores: it only tracks accounts with enough level to appear on the hiscores, and accuracy depends on regular snapshots being taken.
- No updates, no data: without the RuneLite plugin or manual updates, gains can end up incomplete or blurry across spaced-out snapshots.
- Shorter history than CML: being newer than Crystal Math Labs, it lacks the same years-long historical archive for old accounts.
- Less collection-log depth than Temple: its focus is XP, efficiency and competitions, not exhaustive collection-log item tracking.
How to get started
Go to wiseoldman.net, search for your name and hit "Update" to register your account. Then install the official plugin in RuneLite so tracking runs on its own. If you play in a clan, add the Discord bot and create a competition to get the group hooked. It's all free and you don't need an account to start seeing yourself tracked.
